THE CITS TIERED MEMBERSHIP PORTFOLIO

CITS Membership Ladder Framework

The CITS Tiered Membership Portfolio is a dynamic framework that accommodates diverse pathways to the CITS membership and professional recognition. By offering both the Professional Route and the Experiential Route, CITS ensures inclusivity while upholding excellence.

Prospective members are encouraged to pursue the pathway that best aligns with their career trajectory, knowing that each route leads to the same esteemed cadres—Associate, Fellow, Senior Fellow, and Distinguished Fellow.

The CITS Tiered Membership framework is designed to honor excellence in teaching through multiple avenues, ensuring that both academically credentialed professionals and seasoned practitioners can achieve the highest levels of recognition. By maintaining rigorous yet flexible eligibility criteria, CITS fosters a diverse community of educators united by a shared commitment to advancing the teaching profession.

The Chartered Institute of Teaching Specialists (CITS) offers a structured Tiered Membership Portfolio designed to recognize and elevate educators, administrators, educational authors, Educational Consultants and Teaching Assessors. The membership framework is divided into two distinct yet complementary pathways: the Professional Route and the Experiential Route. Each pathway is tailored to accommodate varying levels of expertise, career progression, and professional achievements while maintaining the same prestigious membership cadres.

The two membership pathways, detailing the cadres available under each route, the eligibility considerations, and the distinctions between the routes. The CITS tiered-member cadre ensures inclusivity while upholding the highest standards of professional excellence.

The Professional Route

The Professional Route is designed for individuals who have attained formal qualifications in teaching and its related fields and have demonstrated professional competence through structured career progression—as educators, academicians, or administrators. This route emphasizes academic credentials, professional certifications, and career milestones.

Membership Cadres under the Professional Route

  • Associate Member (ACITS)

The Associate Member cadre is the entry-level tier for early-career teaching professionals who possess foundational qualifications in teaching or related disciplines. Eligibility consideration is open to individuals holding a recognized teaching qualification (e.g., Bachelor of Education, PGCE, or equivalent or any such course of study and for which the intending associate member is already engaged in or employed as a teacher with at least three years of teaching experience. Associate Members are typically early-career educators committed to professional growth.

  • Full Member (MCITS)

Full Membership is conferred upon professionals with substantial experience and a proven track record in teaching and learning development and management. Eligibility requires a minimum of five years of teaching experience, evidence of professional development, and contributions to educational practice (e.g., curriculum design, mentoring, classroom teaching, teaching assessment, learning assessment, Education Administration, or published work). The CITS Full Member demonstrates a sustained commitment to advancing teaching standards.

Membership Cadres under the Experiential Route

The Experiential Route acknowledges the profound expertise of educators who not only have followed a traditional academic pathway but also have acquired substantial knowledge and influence through extensive practice, leadership, and innovation in teaching. This route ensures that seasoned professionals without formal qualifications but with demonstrable impact can attain the same prestigious membership cadres as their peers in the Professional Route. The Experiential Route maintains the same prestigious cadres as the Professional Route, ensuring parity in recognition while differing in eligibility criteria.

  • Associate Member (ACITS)

The Associate Member cadre under the Experiential Route is open to individuals with at least five years of verifiable experience in education, even without formal academic qualifications. Candidates must provide evidence of their practical expertise through professional references, case studies, or documented contributions to educational projects.

  • Full Member (MCITS)

Full Membership via the Experiential Route requires a minimum of seven years of hands-on experience as an educator or education administrator, or consultant. Reserved for educators with at least seven years of experience, a record of leadership (e.g., department heads, teacher trainers, or policy advisors), and significant contributions to the profession through research, innovation, or advocacy.

  • Fellow (FCITS)

Fellowship under this route is granted to professionals with at least twelve years of high-level experience, including roles such as senior education consultants, school executives, or strategic education advisors. Eligibility is assessed based on the depth of impact, thought leadership, and mentorship within the education community.

  • Distinguished Fellow (DFCITS)

Distinguished Fellowship via the Experiential Route is reserved for individuals with over eighteen years of exceptional practice. Awarded to individuals with over fifteen years of exemplary service in education, recognized for transformative leadership, scholarly contributions, and influence at national or international levels. Distinguished Fellows are often thought leaders shaping educational discourse.

  • Eminent Fellow (EFCITS)

Eminent Fellowship under this route is the highest honor, awarded to individuals with a lifetime of transformative contributions to education. The highest honor, conferred upon educators with over twenty years of distinguished service, whose work has had a profound and lasting impact on education. Eminent Fellows include pioneers in pedagogy, recipients of major educational awards, or those who have led systemic reforms, or those who are engaged in providing schooling platforms as private institutions.
